Lye, Caustic Soda Pearl, Sodium Hydroxide NaOH
Sodium Hydroxide, also referred to as Lye, suitable for soap making and all other applications. Lye is highly alkaline, and has the chemical formula NAOH.
Lye is a key ingredient in CP/HP soap making, and is responsible for turning oils into soap through a process known as saponification. Once saponification has taken place, no lye remains in the soap.
Sodium Hydroxide is highly alkaline, corrosive, and classified as dangerous goods for transportation. When making a solution, it must be added to the water/liquid, never the other way round. Misuse can result in serious injury. Full protective clothing including mask, goggles, footwear, gloves and clothing that covers all areas of skin, is essential when handling or using this chemical. Fumes will be given off that can cause harm therefore adequate ventilation of your work area is essential. It must be stored securely, away from children and pets.
